Cycling in the AlgarveOur Algarve bike tour explores the almost forgotten and untouched interior of this region that is known mostly for its excellent beaches and many golf courses. This part of Southern Portugal gets around 300 days of sunshine a year and offers some of the finest cycling conditions in Europe.
You will ride through country lanes dotted with olive, fig, almond, carob and orange groves rooted in stunning red earth, passing countless villages and the occasional Moorish Castle along the way. Although the focus of this cycling route is the rural interior, you will not stray too far from the sparkling coastline though, and you will be able to dip in the warm waters of the Algarve. This warm, sunny bike tour offers on top of great rides, the unbeatable Portuguese hospitality, superb food (particularly fresh grilled fish!) beautiful beaches and great accommodation. |
Day to DayDay 1 - Tavira Loop
42 km / 26 mi Arriving by train from Lisbon or Faro it’s a short walk to your accommodation in the centre of Tavira. Optional warm up ride to get the legs moving.
Day 2 - Tavira to Estoi
43 km / 27 mi Cycle through the Barrocal, a region between the coast and the hills of the interior, today a thriving community where many of the region's traditional crafts are still found, one town still uses the rind and millstone to grind corn and wheat.
Day 3 - Estoi to Olhão Loop
38 km / 24 mi A short ride today toward the large fishing port of Olhão a bustling town with maze like streets and white washed buildings with flat roofs resembling something closer to a North African port.
Day 4 - Estoi to Vale Fuzeiros
57 km / 35 mi Ride out past the fascinating Roman Ruins of Milreu. After the ruins continue through the unique countryside of the Algarve. On one particular stretch you pass fig trees, orange trees, pomegranate and quince.
Day 5 - Vale Fuzeiros to Lagos
62 km / 39 mi Riding parallel to the river Arade between the sea and the Serra de Monchique. Rolling hills and bucolic countryside, all the way into the walled coastal town of Lagos.
Day 6 - Farewell!
Spend extra time exploring Lagos, or visit other areas in the Algarve. From here it's easy to take the train to Lisbon or fly back home. |
