Follow Europe's mighty western border along the wild Atlantic coast, ride from Porto to Ericeira on the Eurovelo 1. Discover secluded beaches, shady pine forests, charming seaside villages and at the right time of year you might see the world's largest waves to ever be surfed, a truly awe inspiring site! You will not only be seduced by bustling port cities and picturesque fishing villages, but you will be impressed by dramatic landscapes and have the chance to enjoy some of the best fish and seafood in the world, while sipping some of the finest wines. |
Day to DayDay 1 - Porto
Enjoy the day exploring this magnificent city on the estuary of the Douro River. Day 2 - PORTO TO FURADOURO
44 KM / 27 MI Easy flat ride from Porto downtown to Furadouro beach. The route uses several bike paths to track the scenic coastline through small towns and villages along the way.
Day 3 - FURADOURO TO COSTA NOVA
49 KM / 30 MI Flat route with a moderate distance following bike paths and boardwalks, and a few sections on the road as well as a lovely short ferry boat ride at São Jacinto, on your way to postcard perfect Costa Nova.
Day 4 - COSTA NOVA TO FIGUEIRA DA FOZ
71 KM / 44 MI A longer but gentle route from the beautiful Costa Nova to the city of Figueira da Foz. Most of the route is on a dedicated bike path along a sandy area with pine trees. A little bit of climbing as you approach Figueira da Foz.
Day 5 - FIGUEIRA TO SÃO PEDRO DE MOEL
78 KM / 48 MI Longest day on the saddle, mostly on bike paths, to arrive at the charming town of São Pedro de Moel, popular with locals and visitors as a relaxed seaside retreat.
Day 6 - SÃO PEDRO TO SÃO MARTINHO
36 KM / 22 MI Riding along the coast on a bike path for the first half of the stage to Nazaré, now famous for the biggest surf wave. Spend some time enjoying the viewpoints from the top of the hill before you go down to town and ride on to São Martinho do Porto, with it's pretty crescent shaped beach.
Day 7 - SÃO MARTINHO TO PENICHE
55 KM / 34 MI A hilly stage with the most important climbs at the beginning of the day, and plenty of great sights including the Arelho river estuary, where you will ride around the Obidos lagoon on easy trails, and then on your way to the fishing town of Peniche.
Day 8 - PENICHE TO ERICEIRA
69 KM / 42 MI Another hilly stage crossing several small valleys with some rewarding views are you cycle towards the lively surf town of Ericeira.
Day 9 Farewell! Adeus!
Enjoy a last day on the beach before heading to your next destination!
Alternatively, if you're up for one last challenge, ride to Sintra. This is a hilly ride on a small mountain range to the UNESCO heritage town of Sintra where bikes can be dropped off at our shop conveniently located near the train station.
