About the Bike TourOne of the great pilgrimage routes of the world - over 1300 years ago the Camino de Santiago was established gradually from several different directions, but all ending at one of the holiest Catholic shrines in Christendom - Santiago de Compostela.
Santiago de Compostela is believed to be the final resting place of Santiago Apóstol, or St. James the Apostle. According to historical accounts, after his martyrdom, St. James body was brought to Santiago de Compostela by boat. Upon the discovery of the bones of St. James, King Alfonso II ordered that a cathedral be erected over his remains. Ever since then, thousands and thousands of devout pilgrims, throughout the early Middle Ages up to today, have made their way to Santiago seeking absolution. The writer, James Michener, called it “the finest journey in Spain, and one of two or three in the world.” The European Union designated it a European Heritage Route. The pilgrimage from Portuguese lands to Santiago de Compostela originated in the Middle Ages. It was used by the sainted Queen Isabel of Portugal in the early 14th century. Your route follows closely the ancient Roman roads of Lusitania and is the second most traveled route after the Camino Frances. Whichever route you take, the incredible beauty of its varied landscapes, charming villages and monuments to the glory of St James will instill unexpected awe in you. |
