About Cycling the Camino'...a pilgrimage across northern Spain to the sanctuary at Santiago de Compostela, is the finest journey in Spain and one of the two or three best in the world.' So wrote James Michner in his monumental book on Spain, Iberia.
For a thousand years since the bones of St. James were reputedly discovered in Santiago, common people, bishops, priests, kings, popes and saints have made this famous pilgrimage. There are several main routes you can take to cycle to Santiago de Compostela, but one of the most famous and popular is the Camino Francés, which many consider to be the original pilgrimage path and certainly the one that follows the footsteps of one of the first guide books ever written - by a monk in the 12th century - the Codex Calixtinus. Aside from the cultural and historic interest of the Camino de Santiago Pilgrimage way, the scenery and many of the roads and trails offer superb cycling touring conditions in their own right. This is why more and more people opt to cycle the Camino, rather than walking the whole route. With our Camino bike rentals and tours you can walk some of the way and cycle the rest - the choice is yours! |
Getting your Compostela
To obtain your Compostela certificate of completion you must cycle at least the last 200 km or walk the last 100 km - with around 3 to 5 stamps a day on your Credencial, or pilgrim passport. If you are cycling to Santiago for spiritual purposes you will be issued a Compostela certificate in Latin and if for cultural reasons, in Spanish, but in either case your name will be in Latin, just as Saint James intended! All our Rental Packs and Tours include your free Compostela Credential.
